BODIES 2021, Mixed Media on Canvas
Two of the women in this series are self-portraits. The others were built from memory, reference, and invention. I painted them nude because the nude body has always been a territory of negotiation. The negotiation between artist and subject, subject and viewer, a woman and the history of how she has been perceived. I wanted to interrupt that history rather than continue it. None of these women are there to please or to entertain. Their bodies are unguarded, but their faces hold varied expressions — anger, exhaustion, a quiet refusal. They are vulnerable, honest, they are simply being. This series is about the body, the authorship, the depth of female embodiment.
